What is the Programme?

A group of projects managed in a coordinated way to gain benefits that would not be possible when the projects are managed independently by D. C. Ferns.

It is a collection of projects managed in a coordinated and collaborative way to gain some benefits that would not be possible when the projects are managed independently.

Different types of Programmes:

  1. Strategic programme: A group of projects implements a single strategy.
  2. Business cycle programme: Projects that an organization undertakes within a planning cycle.
  3. Infrastructure programme: Projects which are performing the activities of identifying common infrastructure and its implementation and maintenance.
  4. Research and development programme: Projects involved in developing new innovative products based on current research work.
  5. Innovative partnerships programme: Projects based on collaboration by different organizations.

Strategic Programme: It is a different form of programme management where a portfolio of projects all contribute to a common objective.

Example: Based on OGC ( Office of Government Commerce) approach.

  1. Programme mandate: Initial planning document is the programme mandate. It describes as:
    • It describes the new services/capabilities that the programme will deliver.
    • How an organization will be improved.
    • How it will fit with the existing organizational goal.
  2. Programme brief: It is equivalent to a feasibility study that emphasis costs and benefits.
  3. The Vision: It explains the new capability that the organization will have.
  4. The blueprint: Explains the changes to be made to obtain the new capability.
